John Wayne Gacy, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 17, 1942. As a child, John had no interest in doing the stereotypical boy things. He better enjoyed gardening and cooking with his sisters and mother. His father was very vocal in disapproval, and would often ridicule him in front of his family and friends. His father was a drunk, and his parents to did not get along.
At age 12, John made his first attempt at fitting in, by joining the Boy Scouts. John was still very different from the rest of the boys, and the only other boy that noticed, was his best friend, Barry Boschelli. One day, he shared a secret with him. He shared with him his desires to dress as a woman, and showed him a pair of panties and bra he took from his mother. John was seriously confused about his sexuality, but learned to hide it deep within.
In his 20s, he moved to Springfield, Illinois, and became very involved with the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). In 1964, he met and married Marlynn Myers. A couple years later when Marlynn was in the hospital giving birth their first child, John was in a bar with a male co-worker. He ended up going home and having oral sex with the man, then rushing to the hospital the next morning. His parents came down to visit, and he saw pride in his father's eyes for the first time. Shortly after, they moved to Waterloo, Iowa.
John's father in law owned three Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, and offered John a job as manager. John loved being the boss, and insisted his employees call him, 'Colonel'. He loved the idea of controlling people. In Waterloo, he once again became involved in the Jaycees.
John recruited men into them Jaycees by inviting them to a motel, and watched porn and brought in prostitutes. In one night, he signed up 20 new members.
John's sexual fantasies spilled over into his marriage, and he an Marlynn would often 'swap spouses' after an evening out. Even though the Jaycees were aware of John's sexual escapades, they still voted him in as Vice President, and 'Man of The Year'. One thing no one knew about, was John's lust for teenage boys.
One day John invited a 15 year old boy to his home, where he got him drunk, made him watch porn, molested him, threatened him, and paid him $50. The boy eventually broke down and told his family. John was arrested and charged with sodomy, and given 10 years in prison, of which he only served 16 months when released on 'good behavior'. He never saw his wife and children again.
John became the head cook in prison, and was even spotlighted on the news, giving an interview about his job. That Christmas while John was in prison, his Father died of liver disease. He was convinced his father died of shame over his conviction. His grief turned into rage, and he took it out on inmates he suspected were gay.
John returned to Chicago upon release. He moved back in with his mother, and got a job as a short order cook. He saved all of his money, opened a maintenance business, and bought a ranch house with his mother. He found a girlfriend, and confided in her about his bi-sexuality and prison record- although 'concerned', she was tolerant. She saw him as a caring man, and her children called him, 'Daddy'.
In 1962, he dove back into his desires for teenage boys. He picked up a boy, took him home to have sex, then stabbed him in the chest. He buried the body under his house. Seven months later, he married his girlfriend, Carol. She moved in with her children, and his mother moved out. He was not content however, and soon picked back up his interest in young men.
John invited a young man who worked for him to his home. On the pretext of showing him a 'magic trick' he coaxed him into putting on handcuffs. John then said, "The trick is, you have to have the key." Gagging him by his underwear, sexual torture began. Afterward, he strangled him with a rope.
John thrived in society. He dressed up as a clown and entertained children in hospitals. John even dabbled in politics. But his marriage was falling apart. He stopped having sex with his wife, and they argued constantly. She filed for divorce after only 3 years of marriage, and left the home with her daughters. He resumed his hunt for young men, killing them, and burying them beneath his home.
John soon hired a man to dig a trench underneath his home in 'specific' places, as he was running out of burial spots. The man also rented a spare room in John's house. One night he came home and found John drunk and dressed in his clown costume. John convinced the man to have a few drinks with him, then talked him into the handcuffs. The young man told him if he didn't take them off, he'd 'kick his ass'. John began growling, throwing the man around and screaming, "I'm going to rape you!" But the man somehow managed to get John down, and retrieve the key. He moved out.
By the end of 1977, John had killed 19 young men. All the while, he managed to maintain his double life- even meeting the First Lady Rosalynn Carter. In 1978, John was murdering every 2-3 weeks. By the end of the year, his torture and killing raised to 32 young men.
In December 1978, he abducted Robert Piest. He was never seen alive again. When witnesses said he was last seen with John, the police questioned him. They retrieved a warrant to search his home, and found numerous personal items belonging to other missing teenagers. John was placed in surveillance. Eventually, the foul stench from the air vents in John's home sparked the revelation of where the bodies were to be found. John met with his attorney for an all night confession.
In March of 1980, John was found guilty and sentenced to death. He quickly cashed in on his celebrity in prison by painting. On May 10, 1994, John was executed, and his brain was removed for examination. No abnormalities were found.
